What Happens When the Context Changes Faster Than the Way We Solve Problems?

In my previous posts, I explored how engineering, design, and healthcare approach complicated problems differently.

I also started thinking about four layers that shape how each industry works:

Fundamentals → Methods → Tools & Technology → Trends & Context

Fundamentals tend to endure.

Methods evolve.

Tools and technology can change quickly.

But context can change even faster.


And today, AI is accelerating that change across almost every industry. Think about it.

A method that worked well a few years ago may no longer be the most effective way to approach a problem. A tool that once required a team of specialists may now be accessible to almost anyone. A problem that used to take months to research and analyze may now be explored in days—or even hours. And the assumptions we make about the world around us can become outdated surprisingly quickly.


So perhaps the challenge isn't simply:

“How do we solve problems faster?”

Maybe it is:

“How do we adapt the way we solve problems when the context itself is changing?”


I've been thinking about a few possibilities.

First, bring more perspectives into the room.

Complex challenges often cross disciplines. Healthcare has long used multidisciplinary teams to bring different expertise together.

Second, use AI to expand those perspectives.

What if AI could act as a virtual multidisciplinary committee—helping us look at the same problem through the lenses of an engineer, designer, clinician, business leader, or patient?

Third, develop people who can wear multiple hats.

Perhaps the future doesn't only belong to deeper specialists. We may also need people who can move between disciplines and understand how different perspectives connect.

And then there is my wildest idea:

What if we could build a “perspective translator”?

Not a language translator.

A tool that could take an idea from one discipline and translate it into another discipline's way of seeing the problem.

Because sometimes the biggest barrier isn't that we lack expertise.

It's that we don't understand how someone else is seeing the same problem.

Maybe adapting to a rapidly changing world isn't just about moving faster.

Maybe it's about seeing more perspectives, connecting them better, and knowing when our way of thinking needs to change.

That's something I'm still exploring.
